Whether you are Medicare eligible yourself or you are helping someone who is, selecting a Medicare Part D prescription plan requires careful analysis to make sure you select the right option. On the surface, most plans look the same in terms of premium and/or annual deductible, however, there are substantial differences between the options in terms of total cost, drug coverage, and convenience. Depending on the medications you need, the co-pay may be higher in some plans, than others, or worse, some plans may not cover the medications at all. Your out of pocket expenses can also vary depending on where you decide to have the prescription filled. Importantly, Medicare Part D plan costs and coverage change from year to year, so even if you are satisfied with your plan currently, you should re-evaluate your options each year to make sure the plan is the best for you and your family. Each year, there is a wealth of information available on the different options, but it’s useful only if you know how to access it, and know how to evaluate the different plans.

This course will review Medicare Part D benefits, and give you the basic skills to sort through the options, including how to evaluate premiums, deductibles, co-pays, formulary tiers and exclusions, pharmacy networks and mail-order options. In addition, we will review the State run EPIC program that is available to many seniors to offset the out of pocket costs of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
